iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Galaxy S26 Ultra: Which Big Flagship Should You Buy?
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra side by side: display, cameras, battery, charging, performance, what expert reviewers found, and the price at Techalls.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max and the Galaxy S26 Ultra are the two biggest flagships you can buy right now. Both have 6.9-inch screens, top-tier chips and pro camera systems, so the choice is less about which is "better" and more about which fits the way you use your phone.
This is Techalls' own comparison, built from Apple's and Samsung's official specifications and published expert reviews (sources at the end). We haven't run our own lab tests, and this isn't a customer review.

Specs from Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max tech specs and Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra specs.
Design and build
The two phones have almost the same footprint, but they feel different. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is 7.9 mm thin and weighs 214 g. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is 8.75 mm and 249 g, a gap you'll notice in a pocket. GSMArena calls the Galaxy "noticeably lighter", while Android Central finds the iPhone's curvier shape more comfortable to hold, and links part of the extra weight to its larger battery and MagSafe magnets.
The iPhone has an aluminium unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. Samsung uses Corning Gorilla Armor 2 on the front and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back. Both are rated IP68.
Colours
iPhone 18 Pro Max: Black, Silver, Glacier, Burgundy.
Galaxy S26 Ultra: Black, White, Sky Blue, Cobalt Violet.
Display
Both screens are 6.9 inches with 120Hz adaptive refresh rates. The Galaxy has the higher resolution (QHD+, 3120 x 1440) and Samsung's new Privacy Display, which can hide your whole screen, specific apps or notifications from people looking at an angle. The iPhone counters with up to 3000 nits outdoors and a 1-nit minimum for night use.
Reviewers split here. GSMArena prefers the Galaxy's panel for its sharper resolution and smaller cutout. Android Central, on the other hand, found that Privacy Display came with lower effective resolution, brightness and contrast compared with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and it picks the iPhone's screen. If you read in crowded places, Privacy Display may be worth it. If you just want the cleanest picture, many reviewers lean iPhone.
Cameras
On paper these are very different systems. Samsung goes for a 200MP main camera and two telephotos (3x and 5x). Apple uses a 48MP main camera with a variable aperture that can switch between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0, plus a 4x telephoto.
What the experts found in practice:
Low light: Tom's Guide gave the iPhone a decisive win for exposure, shadow detail and sharpness, and named it the overall winner of its 200-photo shootout.
Long zoom: in bright light, GSMArena found the Galaxy's 10x shots "substantially better" than the iPhone's 8x. Indoors, the iPhone took the lead.
Macro: Tom's Guide found the Galaxy sharper and more consistent at locking focus.
Portraits: an easy win for the iPhone, according to Tom's Guide.
Video: GSMArena found the iPhone's footage slightly sharper across most lenses, while the Galaxy can also record 8K at 30 fps.
In short, the iPhone is the safer all-rounder, especially at night and for video. The Galaxy is the pick if long-range zoom and close-up shots matter most to you.
Performance
The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs Apple's A20 Pro (6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine). The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, with 12GB of memory (16GB on the 1TB model).
GSMArena's tests showed a small advantage for Apple in raw CPU and GPU performance and better sustained performance. Android Central puts the A20 Pro at least 20% faster, and up to 40% faster in gaming. Either phone will handle anything you throw at it, but heavy gamers and video editors get a little more headroom on the iPhone.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 30 hours of typical use and 45 hours of video playback. Samsung rates the S26 Ultra's 5,000 mAh battery at up to 31 hours of video playback. The makers test differently, so these numbers aren't a direct match.
In GSMArena's lab, the iPhone scored a 19:20h Active Use rating against 16:22h for the Galaxy, and it did better in every on-screen test.
Charging is close. Apple quotes up to 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter, and MagSafe or Qi2 wireless up to 25W. Samsung quotes 60W wired charging, up to 75% in around 30 minutes. GSMArena found both reach 50% in 15 minutes, with the Galaxy reaching a full charge a little sooner. Apple's power adapter is sold separately.
Software and extras
This is often the real decider. iOS works best if you already use a Mac, iPad, AirPods or Apple Watch. Samsung's One UI on Android is far more customisable, and Android Central rates it the most customisable phone software available. The Galaxy also has the built-in S Pen for notes, sketches and precise editing, something no iPhone offers.
Which should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want the longest battery life, the strongest low-light photos and video, top performance for gaming, and you're already in Apple's ecosystem. It also comes in a 2TB option.
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want a lighter, thinner phone, a built-in stylus, Privacy Display, better long-range zoom, and the freedom of Android.
Most reviewers give Apple the overall edge this year, but GSMArena sums it up well: the choice comes down to your workflow, not brand rivalry.
